“I could only eat a spoonful of food each day, and the pain in my liver felt like being stabbed by a knife—when all the doctors said that systemic chemotherapy was the only option, but my body couldn’t handle it, I thought my life had come to an end.” recalled 40-year-old Evelina, her voice choked with emotion. "It wasn't until the doctors in China said, 'We have a way to untie this knot,' that I burst into tears for the first time in my despair."

The Devastating Truth: The Blow of Cancer and Liver Metastasis
In the intense heat of February 2025 in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, Evelina was wasting away due to persistent and severe vomiting. Examinations at a local hospital revealed an approximately 6cm mass in her left breast, accompanied by a massive liver metastasis (about 16cm), as well as lymph node and bone metastases. A pathological biopsy indicated: Invasive Breast Cancer, ER(-), PR(-), HER-2(3+) and Ki-67 90%.
Her liver function indicators were even more alarming: Liver enzyme levels soared to ten times higher than the upper limit of normal, with severe abnormalities in transaminases, globulin, bilirubin, and other markers, accompanied by significant ascites.

Evelina's Liver Enzyme Report
"The doctors said that with liver function like this, it was impossible to withstand systemic chemotherapy, and yet that was the only treatment option," she recalled despairingly. "I asked, 'Is there really no other way?' but the only response I got was silence."
After much effort, she contacted several hospitals in Malaysia, only to receive equally cold replies: "The condition is too severe for surgery; only palliative care is possible." At that moment, she felt even breathing was painful.

A 3 AM Lifeline: Finding a Glimmer of Hope in Desperation
Just as the family was on the verge of collapse, an introductory webpage about Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou became their "last hope". "Interventional therapy, cryoablation... these unheard technical terms were like fireflies in the darkness," said Evelina's sister, who sent a help message at 3 a.m. Within just four hours, the online customer service team from Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou called back: "Please send the medical reports immediately. The MDT is standing by."
During the international video consultation, the doctor's words brought tears to her eyes: "Your liver is crying out for help. We must prioritize liver protection and restoration first, and only consider anti-tumor treatment after your liver function improves." This statement convinced her immediately. Previously, all doctors had emphasized "chemotherapy," but none had addressed her risk of liver failure. For the first time, she felt that a medical team was truly prioritizing her "safety and life". Thus, with trust, she decided to travel to Guangzhou. "The Surabaya International Service Center handled all the procedures for going abroad, allowing me to focus solely on one thing: Staying alive."

Evelina's First Arrival in Guangzhou
Redefining Medical Possibilities: The Miracle of a 16cm Tumor's Disappearance
In March 2025, when kapok trees were in full bloom in Guangzhou, Evelina arrived at our hospital. As she walked into the ward, an Indonesian patient handed her a cup of warm tea, which instantly touched her heart. "There is no cold, sterile, chemical smell here, and the nurses remember that I'm afraid of injections," she noted. Detailed admission examinations further confirmed: An approximately 2×2cm mass in the upper outer quadrant of the left breast, a massive liver metastasis of about 16cm, accompanied by ascites, anemia, and severely impaired liver function.
Our hospital's MDT immediately initiated a combined treatment plan of "Liver Protection + Pain Control":
l Liver Protection Therapy: Gradually improved liver function through intravenous infusion and symptomatic support.
l Interventional Arterial Infusion Chemotherapy and Embolization: Precisely delivered chemotherapy drugs to the tumor while embolizing its blood supply arteries, ensuring concentrated drug efficacy with minimal side effects.
l Targeted Therapy: Addressed HER-2 positivity to control tumor progression.
What astonished her even more was the groundbreaking efficacy of the integrated minimally invasive treatment:
Within 48 hours of admission, her liver function indicators began to improve.
On March 20, she underwent her first session of interventional arterial infusion chemotherapy and embolization. A week later, her abdominal distension had significantly eased, and her appetite returned.
"By the seventh day after treatment, I could actually turn over by myself!" she exclaimed excitedly. "The stabbing pain in my liver disappeared, and even the nurses said my complexion had recovered again."
The second interventional therapy four weeks later brought an even greater miracle: The liver metastatic tumor shrank from 16cm to approximately 2cm, ascites completely disappeared, and liver function gradually returned to normal. Follow-up imaging showed significant reduction in both the breast mass and liver lesions, with partial necrosis observed. When Evelina sent travel photos taken on Guangzhou streets to friends back home, the unanimous response was: "Are you sure the diagnosis was correct? This doesn't look like a cancer patient at all!"

Doctor-Patient Unity: The Warm Power of "Fighting Together"
"The nurses here are like mother birds guarding their chicks," Evelina remarked, pointing to the bedside call button. "Once when I had a slight fever after surgery, three nurses took turns within five minutes to apply ice packs, monitor my condition, change dressings, and offer reassurance." What moved her even more was the doctors' sincerity: During every round, they patiently explained the treatment plan and latest indicators, never concealing her condition, yet always gently holding her hand and saying, "Don’t worry, we’re in this fight together." It was this care and trust that helped her endure the crisis of plummeting white blood cell counts during targeted therapy and even proactively request adjustments and intensification of her treatment plan.
Now, she can eat independently and finish a full plate of turmeric rice in one meal—a far cry from the time when she survived on just one spoonful of food per day. Evelina’s follow-up results showed: Liver metastases significantly reduced, breast lesions under control, and liver function largely restored. At a sharing session, she proudly held up her CT scan and declared, "Look! This is proof of making a way out of no way!"
"Fighting cancer is a tango for two—medical technology provides the steps, and a positive mindset sets the rhythm. Both are indispensable," she reflected.
"There may still be trials ahead, but I will no longer be afraid. With my family’s love and my doctors’ protection, I will continue living my life."
