To further advance the inheritance and innovation of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)culture in the field of cancer treatment, practice the concept of "integrated medicine," and provide more comprehensive and personalized diagnostic and therapeutic services for cancer patients, Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou successfully held a TCM diet salon under the theme "Practicing Integrated Medicine and Promoting Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture" on August 18.

The event adopted a three-pronged approach combining theory popularization, dietary therapy experience, and personalized diagnosis and treatment, creating a platform for cancer patients and their families to understand and practice TCM culture. Participants gained a deep appreciation of the unique value and appeal of TCM in integrated cancer treatment. The event attracted nearly a hundred cancer patients and family members, creating a warm and lively atmosphere.

Lecture on TCM Five-Flavor Diet: Building a Strong Defense for Cancer Patients' Dietary Health

The event began with a professional and practical health sharing session by Director Fu Yudong from our hospital’s TCM Center, titled "The Principle of Five-Flavor Diet in TCM." Based on the physiological characteristics and treatment needs of cancer patients, Director Fu started from the TCM theory of "medicinal diet" and combined the health preservation concept of "moderation in diet and daily routine" from the "Huangdi Neijing" and Tao Hongjing’s "Supplement to Recipes" Tangye Jingfa Diagram. He provided a explanation of the complex correspondence between the "sour, bitter, sweet, spicy, and salty" five flavors and the five organs of the human body, as well as the auxiliary role of different flavors of medicinal diets in the rehabilitation process of cancer patients. He also emphasized the importance of the TCM concept of "preventing recurrence during and after treatment" in cancer rehabilitation, suggesting the establishment of a modern cancer hospital’s personalized integrated medical care prevention system by combining seasonal dietary therapy (nourishing the liver in spring, clearing the heart in summer, moisturizing the lungs in autumn, and tonifying the kidneys in winter) with constitution identification.

Cancer patients often face issues such as loss of appetite, weakened digestive function, insomnia, constipation, and decreased immunity during treatment. Reasonable dietary regulation can not only alleviate physical discomfort but also assist in enhancing treatment efficacy," Director Fu emphasized during the session. He noted that TCM dietary therapy focuses on "tailoring diets based on syndrome differentiation," requiring personalized dietary plans according to the patient’s constitution, disease stage, and treatment plan.

This lecture not only enriched the TCM health preservation knowledge of cancer patients but also reflected our hospital’s emphasis on "dietary regulation" in integrated treatment—combining TCM dietary therapy with Western medicine to build a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment system for patients, helping them better cope with physical challenges during treatment.

Health Sweet Soup Tasting: Integrating TCM Regulation into Daily Life

Following the lecture, the event moved into the warm and engaging "Health Sweet Soup Tasting" session. The TCM Center team meticulously prepared two types of health sweet soups suitable for cancer patients: Peach Gum with Red Dates and Lily Soup, and Poria Cocos Taro Purple Rice Porridge.

l Peach Gum with Red Dates and Lily Soup: Moisturizes the lungs and nourishes the skin, ideal for patients experiencing dry mouth and throat after chemotherapy/radiotherapy.

l Poria Cocos Taro Purple Rice Porridge: Strengthens the spleen and dispels dampness, aiding postoperative patients with weak spleen and stomach functions.

Both soups were carefully designed to address common health needs of cancer patients.

During the tasting, a family member of an Indonesian patient shared: "The Poria Cocos Taro Purple Rice Porridge is sweet and delicious. After drinking it, I felt a comforting warmth in my stomach. I’ve taken pictures of the recipe so I can make it at home later."

Through this practical and approachable tasting experience, cancer patients were able to appreciate the charm of TCM dietary therapy. It highlighted that TCM regulation is not distant or abstract but can be seamlessly integrated into daily diets to complement integrated cancer treatment. This initiative helped patients embrace wellness in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

On-Site Consultations & Herbal Paste Tasting: Personalized Integrated Treatment Plans

The final segment of the event, which drew significant attention from patients, featured on-site consultations and herbal paste tasting.

Director Fu and Dr. Hou from the TCM Center provided complimentary one-on-one consultations for attending cancer patients. They carefully assessed each patient’s symptoms, diet, sleep quality, and other factors through TCM diagnostic methods—observation, listening, questioning, and pulse-taking—to develop personalized herbal paste treatment plans. The event highlighted herbal pastes designed to address common issues among cancer patients, such as qi and blood deficiency, phlegm-stasis accumulation, and bone pain. These included:

l Essence-Replenishing Tonic Paste

l Liver-Kidney Nourishing Paste

l Stasis-Dispersing Recovery Paste

These formulations aim to reduce toxicity and enhance efficacy while strengthening the body’s resistance, effectively alleviating side effects of Western treatments, improving physical constitution, and helping prevent recurrence. They serve as vital complementary approaches in integrated cancer therapy.

Through on-site consultations, physicians gained timely insights into patients’ dynamic conditions and recommended tailored herbal paste regimens. The tasting session allowed patients to experience the long-term benefits of TCM for regulating body balance, supporting their journey through treatment-recovery-relapse prevention in a full-cycle health management model.

In daily practice, our TCM and oncology physicians maintain close collaboration, breaking down barriers between Eastern and Western medicine. By combining TCM syndrome differentiation with Western precision medicine, we provide customized treatment plans that achieve synergistic integrated effects through "East-West collaboration and holistic care."

Practicing Integrated Medicine: Providing Comprehensive Health Services for Cancer Patients

The successful hosting of this TCM Diet Salon event is a vivid reflection of our hospital’s commitment to "practicing integrated medicine and promoting TCM culture." In recent years, with the continuous development of integrated medicine, our hospital has been dedicated to fostering the deep integration of TCM and Western medicine in cancer treatment. By combining TCM’s holistic approach and syndrome differentiation with Western medical diagnostics, minimally invasive therapies, and standardized treatments, we have established a unique integrated cancer treatment system.

From the TCM dietary event and health sweet soup tasting to on-site consultations and herbal paste experiences, our hospital used diverse event formats to help cancer patients and their families appreciate the significant role of TCM in integrated treatment. TCM not only complements Western therapies by reducing side effects and improving quality of life but also provides long-term physical conditioning during rehabilitation, helping to lower the risk of recurrence and metastasis.

In the future, our hospital will continue to organize similar TCM cultural activities, further refining our integrated cancer treatment services. We aim to allow the traditional culture of TCM to shine even brighter in the field of oncology, bringing greater health and well-being to cancer patients worldwide.
